For the cupcakes:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup milk

For the vanilla buttercream:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla.
  4. Mix in sour cream and milk until smooth. Gradually add dry ingredients.
  5. Fill cupcake liners ¾ full. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let cupcakes cool completely.
  7. For the buttercream, beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cream, and vanilla. Beat until fluffy.
  8. Pipe or spread frosting over cooled cupcakes.
