A decadent breakfast casserole featuring layers of custardy bread, creamy swirls of sweetened cream cheese, and juicy blueberries—all baked to golden perfection. Comforting, fruity, and ideal for brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Bake:

  • 8 cups thick-cut brioche or challah bread cubes (about 1-inch pieces; day-old is fine)
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries (no need to thaw)

Custard Mixture:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Cream Cheese Swirl:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Layer ingredients: Place half the bread cubes evenly in the dish, sprinkle with half the blueberries. Dot with half the cream cheese mixture (mix cheese + sugar until smooth). Layer remaining bread and blueberries, then swirl remaining cream cheese across the top.
  3. Prepare custard: In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Pour evenly over the layers, gently pressing bread so it absorbs custard. Let sit 10–15 minutes to soak.
  4. Bake: Bake ~45–50 minutes until custard is set and top is golden-brown. If the top browns too fast, tent with foil.
  5. Cool and serve: Cool slightly before serving. Optionally top with powdered sugar, maple syrup, or extra berries.
