A delightful fusion of apple fritters and waffles, these waffle-shaped donuts are crispy on the outside, tender inside, and filled with cinnamon-spiced apples. Drizzled with a sweet vanilla glaze, they are perfect for a cozy fall breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Apple Filling:

  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled & diced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

For the Batter:

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup (180ml) milk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

For the Glaze:

  • ¾ cup (90g) powdered sugar
  • 12 tbsp milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apple Mixture: In a skillet, melt butter. Add apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Cook 5–7 mins until soft. Set aside to cool.
  2. Make Batter: In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. In another bowl, beat egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Combine wet and dry, then fold in cooled apples.
  3. Cook: Preheat waffle iron and lightly grease. Drop ¼ cup of batter into each section. Cook until golden brown and crisp (3–5 mins depending on your waffle iron).
  4. Make Glaze: Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  5. Serve: Drizzle glaze over warm waffle donuts. Dust with extra powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • Want them more “donut-like”? Use a mini waffle maker or donut waffle iron.
  • Add chopped pecans for extra crunch.
  • Best eaten fresh — reheat in toaster or oven to re-crisp.
